Fishing gates Mist Eel (Cat Snacks / Mist Broth) and several cooking substitutes. You do not get the rod on day one — the tutorial comes through Dave's quest chain.

How to unlock

1. Neighbor Dave the black cat sends a letter → start Cat Snacks (side quest)
2. Route through the sewers to the Lakeside
3. Talk to the fishing expert there — learn rod + QTE basics

Farming/mining tutorials arrive via main quest letters; fishing is the odd one out.

Casting and QTE

1. Carry a fishing rod and bait in inventory — apply bait from the bag first
2. Stand facing open water, press Space to cast
3. Wait through the bite progress bar
4. QTE phase:
   • Green bar (top) fills when you hit correctly
   • Blue bar (bottom) shrinks — cursor tracks along it
   • Press Space when the cursor is on the blue bar → green progress rises
   • Miss → green progress drops; empty green = fish escapes

Tip: Don't mash Space. One clean press per window beats panic spamming.

Fisherman Herb — Cast the Line

NPC Herb

Lakeside fisherman Herb runs a short turn-in quest:

1. Accept Cast the Line from Herb
2. Give him one Flounder → recipe unlock
3. Give him one Mist Eel → Mist Broth recipe unlock

Do this the same trip you farm Mist Eel for Cat Snacks.

Sewer pool — white maggots

From the Maggot Man mystery (Sewers, left side):

• Trade Mysterious Meat → White Maggots
• Fish the sewer pool with white maggots — fish there seem to bite this bait more reliably than worm/leech

Same sewer run as Chaos Thorns if you have not grabbed that ritual yet.
